The problem of garbage in Russia has existed for a long time, but it became especially acute in the 1990s, when industrial production made a sharp jump. The country does not have a proper system for recycling household waste, but attempts are being made to solve the problem of improper waste disposal.

The absence of full – fledged enterprises that carry out complete waste processing and obtaining secondary raw materials is a sign of an inefficient environmental policy. No more than 10% of household waste goes to recycling, while half of it is valuable raw materials from which you can get secondary materials. The remaining garbage – about 90% – is stored in landfills, numerous landfills, where it is subject to rot with the release of toxic substances into the environment.

The problem of waste disposal in Russia is becoming large-scale, so it requires significant investment, as well as personal participation of everyone.

According to a survey by the Delivery Club, as of 2019, more than 80% of Russians use disposable tableware – the main source of plastic – a non-decomposable material. However, about 70% of respondents agreed with the need to limit its use and are ready to completely abandon disposable tableware by 2021.
